This overall sum would also contribute to the cost of hosting the event at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire should a British bid be successful.

According to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the bid process for an event likely to form a key part of European riders’ build-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will open early next year.

The award came after British Showjumping and British Dressage agreed to increase their contributions to a total investment of £120,000 ($180,000/€170,000), up from £60,000 ($90,000/€85,000); the two bodies originally announced their intention to bid for the event a year ago.

The decision dates from a UK Sport Board meeting in June.

Minutes of this meeting also reveal that UK Sport discussed two potential UK bids to host golf’s Solheim Cup in the same year, 2019, but “decided not to make an investment into this event”.

It was announced last month that Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire would host this edition of the event, the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup, pitting Europe against the United States.

The Scottish bid saw off competition from Sweden.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon hailed the announcement as “tremendous news, not only for golf tourism and events in Scotland but for Scotland as a whole”.

UK Government spending on sport is expected to suffer significant cuts in the next few years, with the outcome of a comprehensive spending review due to be unveiled today.
