The South African was confined to his uncle's home in Pretoria last month after serving just one year of a five-year sentence he was given for the culpable homicide of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013.

Unpaid work was part of the 28-year-old's parole conditions and he reported to Pretoria's Garsfontein Police Station today, where he made no comment to waiting journalists.

It has been reported that his tasks could include cleaning hospitals and museums. 

This was the first public appearance made by the blade-running sprinter since his release, and comes as he waits to hear if prosecutors have been successful in a bid to have his conviction upgraded to murder.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through a closed bathroom door - and has always insisted he thought she was an intruder - but efforts led by chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel insist that culpable homicide, which is the equivalent of manslaughter, is not a strong enough charge.

It is claimed he must have known that the person behind the door could be killed and he will be returned to prison if murder is proved and the original decision of Judge Thokozile Masipa is quashed.

Prosecutors, who presented their case in South Africa's Supreme Court in Bloemfontein earlier this month, have asked for a minimum sentence of 15 years behind bars with the verdict deferred to a later unspecified date.
