Iceland's National Paralympic Committee has held its first ever Paralympic Day in capital Reykjavik.

Hundreds of people attended the event at the country's only indoor athletics facility, including some of the best known Icelandic Para-athletes.

Among them was London 2012 swimming champion Jon Margeir Sverrisson, who claimed gold in the men's S14 200m freestyle.

His winning time of 1min 59.62 sec was a world record and enough to edge out Australia's Daniel Fox, who took silver, and South Korean Cho Wonsang who came home for bronze.

He was the only Icelandic medallist in the UK capital and had no pool to swim in on the Paralympic day, but entertained the crowds by taking part in the long jump.

Other attendees could also try out sports offered by clubs all around the country, with wheelchair basketball proving to be a particular success.

Team sports have often proved to be a problem to develop in the country, as Iceland only has a population of just under 330,000 people.

Various other sports clubs also reported a surge in interest in trying Para-sport, giving hope that the next generation of national stars may soon be discovered.

Iceland didn't win any medals at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics, but they had more success at Athens 2004, winning one gold and three silvers.
