American sprinter Richard Browne has been recognised after winning gold in both the T44 100 and 200 metres in Qatar's capital, breaking both world records as he did so.

The 24-year-old is joined by four other nominees, including Cuba's visually impaired sprinter Omara Durand who sealed a hat-trick of golds in Doha.

Dubbed the world's fastest female Paralympian, Durand won the T12 titles in the 100m, 200m and 400m and, like Browne, she set new world records in each discipline she triumphed in.

Joining the pair on the list is Germany's Markus Rehm, winner of the T44 long jump with a leap of 8.40 metres.

This added 11 centimetres to his own world record and was only narrowly shy of the 8.41m Britain's Greg Rutherford registered to win at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Beijing in August.

Rehm's jump would also have won him the London 2012 Olympic title - which was also captured by Rutherford but with a mark of just 8.31m.

Also on the shortlist are China's women's wheelchair basketball team, who have been nominated collectively after winning the Asia/Oceania Championships with a 59-43 win over Australia.

That booked a qualifying spot at Rio 2016 and also meant that Australia, the reigning silver medallists from London 2012, would be denied the chance to upgrade to gold in the Brazilian city next summer.

The last name on the shortlist is Italian wheelchair fencer Beatrice Vio, winner of her seventh straight major event in the women’s foil category B at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Paris.

She is now just one win away from a perfect season.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs) and the public get to decide the overall winner using a poll on the IPC's website.
