Hosts South Africa came from behind against Kenya in the semi-finals of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Men’s African Championships to set up a gold medal match with Egypt tomorrow.

Goals from Lloyd Norris-Jones and Jean-Pierre de Voux earned the home country a 2-1 win in Johannesburg after George Mutria had given Kenya a surprise 48th minute lead.

Having won all four of their Pool A matches without conceding a goal, South Africa were forced to show resilience for the first time and they did just that.

Standing between them and a seventh successive crown is two-time champions Egypt, who they have beaten in five of the last six finals.

Mohamed Zaki set the Egyptians on their way to victory against Ghana in the other semi-final, after which Mahmoud Mamdouh, Ashraf Said, Mohamed Edris and Ahmed Elnaggar all chipped in to make it 5-0 by the 35th minute mark.

Michael Baiden pulled a goal back for Ghana two minutes later, before a brace from Mohamed Hassan wrapped up an emphatic 7-1 win for Egypt.

The third and last match of the day saw Zimbabwe and Nigeria battle it out for fifth place with the latter coming out 3-2 winners in a shootout following a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Prior to tomorrow’s final, Ghana will play Kenya in the third-place playoff, while Namibia face Tanzania with seventh spot at stake.

The women's title is also due to be decided tomorrow with South Africa needing just a draw against Ghana to secure top spot in the round-robin format.
