Late charge propels de Rozario to gold as world record spree continues in Doha

Australia’s Madison de Rozario won a stunning race to clinch women’s T53 800 metres gold at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Doha today.

The wheelchair racer denied compatriot Angie Ballard her third gold medal in Qatar’s capital after making a late charge around the outside which saw her power to the line.

Her winning time of 1min 53.86sec pushed China’s Hongzhuan Zhou, who registered 1:53.95, into silver while Ballard, the 200m and 400m champion, had to settle for bronze in 1:54.08.

“I was just trying to stay in a medal position and then I realised I had a little left in the tank and just went for it,” said de Rozario.

“This is not my strongest event so it’s a shock to be first.

"I can’t even express with words how I feel.”

A host of other medals were decided at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium today and world records also continued to fall.

In the women’s F35 shot put, Ukraine’s Mariia Pomazan threw a new global best of 13.05 metres for gold, breaking her own world record of 12.35m set at the last World Championships in the French city Lyon in 2013.

“I am very happy, it was a great competition,” said the London 2012 gold medallist.

“I didn’t really think about breaking my own world record, I just did it.”

Jun Wang of China was the silver medallist with a throw of 12.23m, while bronze went to Marivan Oliveira of Brazil with a distance of 9.17m.

Another world record fell in the men’s T36 long jump as Russian Evgenii Torsunov lept 5.75m, again beating a mark he set himself – this time of 5.66m in Berlin in June.

Roman Pavlyk of Ukraine took silver with 5.54m and Australia’s Brayden Davidson did enough for bronze with 5.44m.

In the women’s F13 javelin, there was gold and a world record for Azerbaijan thanks to Irada Aliyeva’s effort of 44.18m.

She edged out Russia’s Anna Sorokina, whose personal best throw of 42.66m earned her silver, while Yuping Zhao of China took bronze with an effort of 41.26m.

The United States’ Rachael Morrison joined the world record club with her 12.86m effort to win gold in the women’s F52 discus, ahead of Italy’s Leticia Ochoa Delgado, who claimed silver with 10.66m, and Great Britain’s Joanna Butterfield who took bronze with 8.96m.

Nigeria were also celebrating as Lauritta Onye set a women’s F40 shot put world record of 7.72m, taking gold in front of the Netherlands’ Lara Baars, who threw a European record of 6.80m for silver, and bronze medallist Rima Abdelli of Turkey who managed 6.75m.

Meanwhile, Britain’s London 2012 champion Richard Whitehead set a world record of 24.10sec in the heats of the T42 200m, with the double amputee looking set to defend the title he won in Lyon two years ago.

Gold medallists on the track included Poland’s Michal Mateusz Derus, who won the men’s T47 100m in 10.73 ahead of Brazil’s Yohansson Nascimento, who clocked 10.99 for silver.

The bronze went to Hao Wang of China, who ran 11.06.

Canada’s wheelchair racer Brett Lakatos, winner of 100m and 200m gold medals earlier this week, had started the T53 400m as favourite but could only manage silver in 49.45 following a strong push from China’s Huzhao Li who clocked 49.32 in the outside lane.

Thailand’s Pongsakom Paeyo recorded 50.42 for the bronze.

Double long jump Paralympic champion Ilse Hayes of South Africa added a track world gold to her medal collection as she won the women’s T13 200m in 25.24.

American Kym Crosby had to settle for silver in 25.93 with the bronze going to Sanaa Benhama of Morocco who was timed at 26.35.
