Commercial potential held by the world's biggest stars has been hailed by Badminton World Federation (BWF) secretary general Thomas Lund after India's Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal signed a multi-million-dollar management contract with IOS Sports & Entertainment.

Nehwal, silver medallist at this year's World Championships but ranked number one in the world, is expected to earn around $3.7 million (£2.4 million/€3.2 million) as part of a two-year deal.

The New Delhi-based company will manage the 25-year-old's endorsements, appearances, brand profiling, patents, licensing and digital rights, as well as images and visibility on social networking sites.

She has already been unveiled as an ambassador for another major Indian company in Edelweiss Financial Services, and will now spearhead their latest advertising campaign.

“This is a great example for other badminton players of how on-court results can translate to financial rewards," said Lund.

"This is the pay-off for working hard on your off-court presence and engaging with media, fans and sponsors.

"Just after a match - whether having won or lost - it is often exhausting to face the international media or appear at sponsor activities, but this is what is needed and expected from superstars like Saina.

"It’s not just playing great matches but also exposure like this that builds a player’s brand value while promoting the sport."

Badminton is keen to boost its presence in the global sports market, particularly in Asia where the sport is among the most popular.

Making bigger stars of its leading players will compliment other successes enjoyed of late, it is hoped, including attracting high-profile corporate sponsorship, consolidating its position within the Olympic Movement and continuing to extend its global broadcast household reach, which is now thought to exceed 500 million.

Nehwal's success has also been enjoyed by other leading players, including Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei and China's two-time reigning Olympic singles champion Dan Lin, who are each thought to be two of the most marketable and highest-earning athletes in their respective countries.

“Saina is certainly one of our most notable stars on the international badminton circuit and her sporting glory has led to her becoming a national celebrity and indeed a brand in India," added Lund.

"She clearly understands the value of her brand and has been working hard to maximise it.

"This has made her a marketable commodity with whom companies want to be associated and she has a variety of endorsements."
