Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu maintained her position at the top of the leaderboard with two gold medals at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup event in Singapore today.

After the first day of finals at the competition were cancelled by swimming’s governing body due to poor air quality in the Asian nation, causing a high level of smog near the outdoor OCBC Aquatic Centre, the second set of events went ahead, with Hosszu proving the star performer.

The 26-year-old, who won double gold at the recent FINA World Championships in Kazan, clocked 4min 12:00sec to claim victory in the women’s 400 metres freestyle ahead of team-mate Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Australia’s Jessica Pengelly.

Hosszu also took the women’s 400m individual medley honours in a time of 4:37.30, again ousting teammate Jakabos, with Zhou Min of China coming through to seal third.

The Hungarian, who also clinched two third-placed finishes as well as second in the 100m backstroke, picked up a total of 237 points for her performances, leaving her sitting top of the women’s overall leaderboard on 594.

Jakabos was able to finish the day with a gold medal around her neck after she posted a time of 2:08.65 to reign supreme in the women’s 200m butterfly.

South African Cameron Van der Burgh leads the way in the men’s competition on 402 points as the reigning Olympic champion clocked 59.38sec in the men’s 100m breaststroke to secure his ninth gold medal of the FINA World Cup season.

Kevin Cordes of the United States was second while China’s Li Xiang touched the wall in third.

Australia were the top performing nation as they took home four gold medals, with Cate Campbell topping the podium in the women’s 100m freestyle in 53.09.

World 100m backstroke champion Emily Seebohm demonstrated her prowess in the event once more by clocking 58.72 to take gold, while teammate Ashley Delaney sealed victory in the men’s 50m backstroke in 25.30.

The final Australian success came thanks to Daniel Smith in the men’s 200m freestyle, who posted 1:48.15 to secure gold.

Elsewhere at the event in Singapore, Japan matched the Hungarian haul of three golds as Katsumi Nakamura, Shirai Yuki and Masato Sakai all won their respective races.

Nakamura proved too strong in the men’s 50m butterfly, finishing in 22.47 to edge Australian duo Kyle Chalmers and Te Haumi Maxwell, while Yuki claimed victory in the men’s 200m backstroke in 1:57.96.

His time saw him touch the wall in front of Delaney of Australia and Omar Pinzon Garcia.

Sakai’s triumph came in the men’s 100m butterfly as he finished ahead of Russian Viacheslav Prudnikov and home favourite Zheng Wen Quah, who couldn’t be separated in second, thanks to a time of 53.53.
