China secured qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after beating the Philippines 78-67 in the final of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Championship on home soil.

The Chinese, who suffered quarter-final elimination two years ago when the Philippines’ capital Manila hosted the Championship, completed an unbeaten campaign in Changsha-Hunan to claim their 16th continental crown.

The Philippines led 15-10 after four minutes of the contest, but that was as good as it got for them as China reeled off 12 unanswered points and stayed in front from then on.

Youngsters Zhou Qi, Guo Ailun and veteran Yi Jianlian led the way in China's first-ever final showdown against the Philippines, who also finished runners-up to Iran in 2013.

Unable to attack the rim inside because of China's size and tenacity, the Philippines needed to hit some shots from three-point range, but made just six of 24.

China meanwhile converted nine of 24 and were also helped considerably on their way to victory by 16 points and 14 rebounds from Zhou, whose team-mate Yi was rewarded for his consistently impressive performances throughout the tournament by being named its Most Valuable Player.

The 27-year-old registered 11 points, 15 rebounds and 2 blocks for China in the final and averaged 16.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per game, while shooting 52.9 per cent from the field.

He headlined the All-Star Five, which also included Guo and Zhou, the Phillippines’ Jayson Castro and Iran captain Samad Nikkhah Bahrami.

Bahrami notched a game-high 35 points as the 2013 champions bounced back from their semi-final defeat to China to take a 68-63 victory over Japan in the third-place match.

The Philippines, Iran and Japan booked places in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs).

The winning nation from each of the three six-team OQTs will earn a Rio 2016 berth.

Elsewhere on the final day of action, Lebanon claimed fifth spot with a narrow 88-87 win against South Korea, while Qatar secured seventh place after defeating India 84-58.
