The Brazilian men’s team had found themselves on the brink of defeat in their semi-final tie against the hosts with South Korea’s Jung Min Lee and Seung Su Lee securing victories in the under 73 kilogram and 81kg clashes.

It gave the home team a 2-1 advantage after Brazil’s Charles Chibana had claimed a shido penalty triumph over Dong Rock Lee in the opening bout, in the under 66kg division.

However the Brazilian team would fight back in the under and over 90kg bouts as Eduardo da Silva Bettoni and Walter dos Santos Costa earned ippon victories to seal their team’s place in the gold medal match in the KAFAC Indoor Sports Complex.

The defending champions were buoyed by their semi-final victory and went on to secure back-to-back World Games titles by brushing aside Mongolia 4-1 for gold, with Leandro Leme da Cunha claiming a victory by ippon in his under 73kg bout.

Bettoni also secured an ippon triumph and a yuko by Costa ensured his team ended on top of the podium.

South Korea bounced back from their semi-final loss by beating China 4-1 to secure the first bronze on offer in the competition, while Azerbaijan also picked up their first medal of the Games by whitewashing Algeria 5-0.

Brazil though would prove unbeatable in the team events as their women’s squad reached the gold medal match by earning a 5-0 win over China and they were able to replicate the feat in the final as they won every bout against Poland.

Both the beaten semi-finalists China and Russia, who lost 3-2 to Poland, were awarded bronze medals in the competition.

The second day of the Games will see medals claimed in aeronautical pentathlon, athletics and fencing events.
