Hong Kong’s Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah has presented the flag of the nation at a special ceremony ahead of the National Youth Games.

The event at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui was attended by Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong President Timothy Fok, as well as vice-presidents of the Organising Committee for the event Tony Yue and Michelle Li.

During the ceremony, Lau spoke of how the Hong Kong Government are committed to the development of its athletes through participation at sporting events, such as the National Youth Games.

“To nurture young talents in sports, the Government allocates extra resources to enhance training and supports them to join large-scale sports competitions during which the athletes can advance their skills through observations and accumulation of actual experience,” he said.

The competition in Fujian province in China, which begins on October 18 and ends on October 27, will see around 214 athletes from Hong Kong compete across the 20 sports on the programme.

Formerly known as the National Intercity Games, the event is organised by the General Administration of Sport of China and undertaken by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

It sees athletes from surrounding areas and territories such as Hong Kong participate, with an emphasis on giving some of the young stars of the region exposure to a multi-sport event environment.

The full competition schedule is due to be released soon.

The Stadium of the Fuzhou City Haixia Olympic Sports Complex will play host to the Opening Ceremony on October 18.
