South Africa’s women’s team have become the latest side to book their spot at the Rio 2016 Olymoic Games after they won the Women’s Sevens qualifying event with a comfortable 31-5 victory over Kenya on home soil in Kempton Park.

The hosts dominated the tournament from start to finish, racking up 265 points and conceding just five on their way to sealing their all-important Rio 2016 berth.

Having claimed comfortable victories over Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia, South Africa proved too strong for Kenya in the final as Zenay Jordaan and Phumeza Gadu both bagged a double, while Nosiphiwo Goda also got on the scoresheet as the home side recorded a convincing win.

The final had started badly for South Africa, however, as second seeds Kenya, who thumped Zimbabwe 39-0 in their semi-final, took the lead before the South African side found their form and justified their favourites billing.

Jordaan and Gadu both touched down in the first half as the hosts established a 17-5 lead at the break, before further tries from Goda and Gadu saw them to a relatively trouble-free triumph.

Their success guarantees them a place at Rio 2016 alongside New Zealand, Canada, Australia and England, who qualified by virtue of finishing in the top four of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Colombia, United States and France have also secured their places by winning their respective regional qualifiers.

Runners-up Kenya, as well as Tunisia and Zimbabwe, still harbour hopes of competing at Rio next year, where rugby sevens will make its debut on the Olympic Programme, as they will participate at next year’s repechage tournament, which will decide the 12th and final qualifier.

Elsewhere at the Olympic qualifier in South Africa, Tunisia powered past Zimbabwe 33-0 to claim third, while Botswana won the Bowl by beating Zambia 12-5.

Madagascar lifted the plate thanks to a 15-0 success against Senegal and Uganda thrashed Namibia 36-0 to secure ninth place.

The next Olympic regional qualifiers will be held in Asia as both the men’s and women’s events are due to take place in Hong Kong on November 7 and 8.
