Hosszu ends Hong Kong World Cup with eight titles after maintaining stunning form

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu continued her stunning form at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup in Hong Kong as she secured another three victories to extend her lead in the overall standings of the eight-leg circuit.

Having secured five golds on the opening day of the third event of the season, the 26-year-old added to her tally by winning the women's 200 metres butterfly in 2min 09.09sec ahead of her team-mate Zsuzsanna Jakabos, who finished 0.12 seconds adrift as runner-up.

She then added to her gold medal tally by winning the women's 400m freestyle in a time of 4:13:93, with Yawen Hou of China and Jakabos second and third in 4:16.46 and 4:25.30.

A stunning two-days’ work by Hosszu was completed after she touched home in 4:42.27 to win the women's 400m individual medley with her compatriot Jakabos once again securing a podium finish after finishing in a time of 4:47.41.

Austria’s Jordis Steinegger ended in third in 4:53.00..

Australia’s Emily Seebohm is trying to remain close to Hosszu in the World Cup standings and she claimed gold in the women’s 100m backstroke by finishing in a rapid time of 58.88, which saw her end nearly three seconds clear of United States’ Missy Franklin.

Belinda Hocking completed the podium after ending in a time of 1:01.87 but the Australian was overshadowed by her team-mate Seebohm who believes her form bodes well for next year, when Rio 2016 will be a clear focus.

“It’s been great preparation,” she said.

“Obviously it’s all about next year for me.

“Hong Kong has been a great preparation for next year and that’s what this trip has been all about.”

There was further Australian success after Cate Campbell beat Hosszu and the US duo of Franklin and Madison Kennedy to gold in the women’s 100m freestyle event by finishing in a time of 53.60sec, while Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson added to her 100m breaststroke gold by winning the 50m event in 30.90.

South Africa’s Cameron Van Der Burgh was also one of the stars on show as he dominated the men’s 100m breaststroke after finishing in 1:00.23.

Japan’s Akihiro Yamaguchi took second place in 1:01.62 while Australia’s Tommy Sucipto was a further 0.04 behind in third.

Japan also enjoyed a positive close to the meet as Katsumi Nakamura won the men’s 50m freestyle title in 22.15, having won the 100m gold on the first day of action.

Home favourite Geoffrey Cheah earned silver in a time of 22.54 while Australia’s Te Haumi Maxwell took bronze after touching home in 22.68.

Nakamura’s compatriot Masato Sakai added to their Japanese tally by winning the 1500m freestyle title in 15:28.04 prior to Yuki Shirai adding the country’s medal tally by securing gold in the 200m backstroke after finishing in 1:58.68.
