Jordan Olympic Committee hope the mascot will encourage youngsters to take up sport ©JOC

A mascot called Nash the Black Iris has been unveiled by the Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC), who will attempt to deliver messages about the importance of sport and healthy living to the country’s youngsters.

Prince Feisal Al Hussein, President of the JOC, oversaw the development of the mascot which was launched at the Children’s Museum with dozens of children and the Minister of Education, Mohammed Thneibat in attendance.

Several JOC Board members and VIP guests were also present at the event to welcome the mascot, which Prince Feisal believes will help to engage with children throughout the country and encourage them to take up sport.

“It is well documented that unless you have exposed children to sport by the time they are eight, then you have probably lost them,” he said.

“Nash is someone that the children can relate to who can then teach them the true values of sport in a fun way that they can understand.

“This is just the start of a long-term programme to bring young children closer to sport like never before.”

Nash is a character based upon Jordan’s national flower, which has survived harsh desert conditions to become a popular sporting icon, with the school children at the launch becoming the first to be enrolled into the Nash Club after taking the Nash pledge.

They were also able to watch the film “The Story of Nash” which explains how he became the governing body’s children’s ambassador, which is now available to watch online here.

Following the launch several school children will visit the JOC as part of the Royal Health Awareness Society’s healthy schools initiative, while further events are set to take place in 2016 with the aim for Nash to have been able to reach out of every child under the age of eight in the country.
