The Norwegian team of Steffen Walstad, Julie Molnar, Sander Roelvaag and Pia Trulsen had negotiated a tough route to the final having had to play in the quarter-final qualifier yesterday which they won 7-5 against the United States.

That set up a semi-final with China on the final day of the tournament but the contest swung hugely in Norway's direction after they responded to the Chinese team taking a 2-0 lead after the opening end by scoring four points in the second.

It then became a cagey encounter with neither side able to score more than one point in an end with Norway eventually advancing to the gold medal match with a 7-3 margin of victory, with their opponents Scandinavian rivals Sweden after they became the first team to beat Russia with the final score ending 6-5.

It would prove to be a closely fought final but Norway seized control after scoring two in the sixth end to move into a 5-2 lead and although Sweden were able to pull one back in the seventh, it was to end 5-3.

“The whole team was a little tense in the quarter-finals but today we found our play,” Walstad said afterwards.

“The final happened to be our best game.

“I didn’t feel we were ever in any trouble and the Swedes didn’t play as well as they have this week, I’m really happy to win.”

China were able to secure the bronze medal after beating Russia 5-4 after scoring one point in an additional end after the tie had finished level after eight ends had been played.
