World number one Novak Djokovic secured his second US Open title after overcoming Switzerland’s Roger Federer in an enthralling men’s singles final at Flushing Meadows in New York City.

The Serbian was bidding to become only the seventh man to earn 10 Grand Slams and he came through in four sets, 6–4, 5–7, 6–4, 6–4.

He had to wait for his triumph though as his encounter with Federer, who boasts the most Grand Slam titles with 17, was threatened by the weather as rain caused the start to be put back by three hours.

However, the wait would prove to be worthwhile for the crowd in the Arthur Ashe Stadium as the final began in stunning style with Djokovic breaking his opponent in only the third game, only for Federer to deliver an instant riposte to level the scores.

It would only prove to be a brief respite for the Swiss star as his serve continued to come under mounting pressure and despite saving five break points in the opening set he was unable to hold off Djokovic in the seventh game, with the Serbian then holding serve twice to secure the set 6-4.

It was far from an ideal start for Federer, who has been without a Grand Slam win since 2012, but with the crowd firmly on his side he began to work his way back into the contest in the second set.

A bright start to the set from Federer, in which he forced but failed to convert five break points in Djokovic’s first service game, saw the momentum begin to swing in his favour.

He eventually secured two set points on his rival's serve and took his second opportunity to claim the set 7-5 and level the match.

Both players traded breaks early in the third set but Djokovic had begun to regain control and eventually made the breakthrough in the penultimate game to take charge of the match.

He soon set about putting the game beyond doubt as he began to force Federer into making a string of unforced errors, which enabled him to break on two occasions on route to sealing a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win and add to his Australian Open and Wimbledon triumphs earlier this year.

"It's been an incredible season, next to 2011 the best of my life," Djokovic said.

"I'm enjoying this year more than I did any previous one because I'm a husband and a father, and that makes it sweeter."

The final day of the Championships also saw the conclusion of the women’s doubles tournament with the top seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Sania Mirza of India earning a straight sets victory.

The duo had secured their first doubles Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and proved to be a class above their opposition at the US Open as they progressed to the final without having dropped a set and maintained that record by beating Australia’s Casey Dellacqua and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3.

It would also be Hingis’ second triumph at this year’s tournament having already secured the mixed doubles title with India’s Leander Paes.
