Canadian wheelchair rugby star Trevor Hirschfield has been named as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month for August 2015.

The 29-year-old played a key role as Canada won the gold medal in front of a home crowd at the Parapan American Games in Toronto last month.

He finished second for scoring for Canada with seven goals as the United States were beaten 57-54 in an exciting final.

The class 1.0 player often guarded higher class opponents and helped his country avenge a 60-59 overtime defeat to the Americans earlier in the tournament.

Nominations for the award are decided after submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations, and the ultimate destination of the award is then put to a public vote.

Hirschfield scooped a 47 per cent share to fend off Czech archer David Drahoninsky, who received 41 per cent, and fellow Canadian Aurelie Rivard, a swimmer, who had nine per cent.

The Italian cycling trio of Luca Mazzone, Vittorio Podesta and Alex Zanardi garnered two per cent of the votes between them, and Cuban sprinter Omara Durand had one per cent.
