Hosts Japan slipped to their first defeat at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Men's World Cup as they went down in four sets to the United States in Hiroshima.

Taylor Sander led four American scorers in double figures with 20 as his side won 25-23, 21-25, 25-11, 25-14 to make it two wins from two.

Masahiro Yanagida led with 14 marks for a Japan side who could not back up their opening night victory over Egypt at the Green Arena.

The US are top of the 12 team group after two matches with each country set to play each other in a round robin format across six cities.

Elsewhere in Hiroshima, the Egyptians suffered their second straight defeat in five sets as they were beaten by Canada.

Canada took the first two sets 25-22, 25-23 but Egypt battled back to level after taking the third and fourth sets 25-21, 26-24 respectively.

That set up a fifth set decider and Canada recorded their first win of the tournament by taking it 15-12.

Italy are second in the standings after they beat Australia in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-15.

The Australians are yet to win at the tournament and have not even collected a set.

Three games were also played at the Hamamatsu Arena and Argentina and Poland both made it two wins out of two.

Argentina backed up their opening success over Iran by seeing off continental rivals Venezuela in a clash which went the distance.

The Venezuelans won a lengthy first set 32-30 before Argentina recovered to take the second 25-15.

Venezuela edged in front again by taking the third 26-24 but their standards again slipped as the Argentinians levelled the match by taking the fourth 25-13.

In the decider, Argentina again had breathing room as they took it 15-10.

Poland's victory was more comfortable but they did slip a set behind to Russia, who claimed the opener 28-26.

A tight second set was edged by the Poles, 27-25, and they then closed out the match 25-19, 25-22.

In the final game, Iran beat Tunisia in four sets to rack up their first victory.

They enjoyed a 25-17, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20 win to leave Tunisia without a win so far.

The top two teams at the tournament will qualify for next summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with the action set to continue tomorrow.

In Hiroshima, the US are due to play Canada, Egypt face Italy and hosts Japan entertain Australia.

Hamamatsu sees games between Iran and Venezuela, Poland and Argentina and Russia and Tunisia.
