Russia's Stepanida Artakhinova and United States' David Drahoninsky each broke world records on the final day before medals action begins at the World Archery Para Championships in Donaueschingen, Germany.

Artakhinova had earlier been knocked out of the individual compound competition, meaning her medal chances had gone, but fought back with a superb series of performances in the secondary tournament to keep alive her hopes of securing a Rio 2016 quota spot.

She first beat Karina Granitza of Germany before overcoming Sweden’s Zandra Reppe with a world record score of 147 out of 150 from her 15 arrows to emerge top of a seven-archer field in the secondary competition.

The London 2012 bronze medallist now has to wait and see what happens in the finals on Sunday (August 30) as to whether she will also secure Paralympic qualification.

“I only knew when my coach told me,” the Russian admitted.

“But I’ve shot consistently well this week and my training has been good.

"I’ve been focusing on my technique in the past few months and training very hard to achieve the best results possible.”

“Each competition I have gotten better and now I have shot a world record, I hope this form continues for future competitions and the Paralympic Games in Rio."

United States' Drahoninsky was also in record-breaking form in the W1 men's event as he pursues a first world title to add to his Beijing 2008 gold.

He overcame defending champion Jean-Pierre Antonious of Finland by 10 points with a world record 144 to set up a final with Britain's John Walker.

All the individual finals are due to take place on Sunday, with medal matches in the team events up first tomorrow.
