USA Paratriathlon will be hosting a free Para-triathlon summit at Fosco Park in Chicago during next month’s International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Grand Final.

The summit, scheduled to take place on September 16 and 17, will cover how to create a Para-triathlon club or programme, as well as outline the basics of the sport at the grassroots level and offer an opportunity for attendees to meet elite Para-triathletes competing in the ITU Para-triathlon World Championships on September 18.

Among the triathletes on hand will be the United States’ Melissa Stockwell, a three-time world champion having won the women’s TRI-2 class in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Educational panels during the summit include "Para-triathlon 101", focusing on everything from grassroots Para-triathlon programmes all the way up to high performance for elite-level athletes, including the sport classes and the classification process.

Among the other highlights is the "Road to Rio" panel, looking ahead to next year’s Games in Brazil and how triathletes qualify for a spot on the United States Paralympic team.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Dutch city Rotterdam will succeed Chicago in hosting the Para-triathlon World Championships.

Scheduled for July 23 and 24 next year, the event, which will represent the first time Para-triathlon has had a stand-alone World Championships, takes place just two months before the sport is due to make its Paralympic Games debut in Rio de Janeiro.

Registration is open now for the Para-triathlon summit, including lunch and a networking cocktail hour.
