The Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) has celebrated International Youth Day by launching a new mobile app providing the latest sports news, events and interviews to the young people of Jordan.

The JOC has created the app in a bid to be better connected with its younger audience with a "notification" service that aims to ensure sports news and information is delivered directly to the handset.

It is claimed that 38 per cent of Jordan’s population is now using a smart phone and nearly 70 per cent of the population is aged under 30.

"The JOC is committed to empowering all Jordanians to be active and enjoy sport," said Lana Al Jaghbeer, secretary general of the JOC.

"The new mobile app is designed to connect sport with younger audiences to keep them well informed with all the latest news and opportunities at their fingertips wherever they may be in the world."

The JOC claims to have a vision for sport and healthy living to play a part in the lives of all Jordanians, and the app, which is in English and Arabic, is immediately available for all Android devices from the Play Store and in the coming days for iPhone and iPad users from Apple’s App Store.

The United Nations’ International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognise the efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society.

It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.
