Australia’s Josh Barry claimed the individual bowls title at the 2015 Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) World Games in Nottingham to add to the pairs gold he won yesterday.

Barry defeated England’s Laurie Turner 2-0 to secure top honours, however, compatriot Lucas Protopapas missed out on the podium after losing 2-1 to Turner’s team mate Steve Angus in the bronze medal match.

Having taken the first set 9-3, Barry was soon 7-0 in front in the second and although Turner regained the jack for one end, she shook hands after five.

After the match, Turner announced his retirement from international bowls having competed in the World Games since 1981; initially in track and field athletics and then as a bowler from 2001.

The bronze medal game was a much closer affair and it looked for a while as though Protopapas had it in his grasp.

The teenager comfortably won the first set 10-3 and moved into an early lead in the second, but Angus was not to be denied, taking control with four shots in end three and holding on for a 6-5 set victory.

The first two tie-break ends were shared, putting the fate of the bronze medal down to the final eight woods of the competition.

Angus steadily built up the head in his favour leaving Protopapas a pressurised last wood from which he failed to move anything and handed his opponent third place.

In the final pairs group games, England’s duo of Les Smith and Angus beat Scotland’s Barry Jackson and John Wardrope to take silver, while George Pierrepoint and Turner overcame Garry Brown and Fraser Mathieson to take bronze as England got the better of Scotland once more.

Meanwhile in football, Brazil beat England 3-0 to top their group of the Under-19 Cerebral Palsy World Football Championships, being held alongside the CPISRA World Games, and set up a semi-final clash against Scotland tomorrow.

Brazil broke the deadlock just before half-time through Bruno Pratis Da Silva before two late goals from Wessley de Souza Mendes wrapped up the win.

England are now set for a semi-final meeting with Russia, who defeated Australia 5-0 to round off the group matches.
