More than 2,000 people turned out to celebrate Olympic Day in Singapore, coinciding with the Opening Ceremony of the country's Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF).

Held annually by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and McDonald’s, the Olympic Day celebrations aim to spread the Olympic ideals and values of excellence, friendship and respect, and encourage people of all athletic abilities to get active.

Participants had the opportunity to try out various Olympic sports-related activities at the Jurong East Sports Centre and take part in a fun family walk, joined by guest of honour Tan Chuan-Jin, President of the SNOC and Minister for Social and Family Development.

They were also able to offer their support to athletes contesting the SYOF, which opened yesterday.

"We are pleased to collaborate with McDonald’s for this year’s Olympic Day celebrations," said Chris Chan, secretary general of the SNC.

"The Olympic Day celebrations bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to keep active and embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect."

Other fringe events, including a spot art competition and sand art activity, were also enjoyed by the participants.

Athletes at the SYOF, of which there were close to 2,300 aged 18 and under, are competing in nine sports - 3x3 basketball, badminton, football sevens, rugby sevens, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.

The SYOF aims to inspire more Singaporeans to take up sports and bring youth together to foster stronger friendship through sports.

It is organised by the Singapore Olympic Foundation and was first held in 2011 to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games.
