Hungarian secure hat-trick of golds on final day of swimming at 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi

Hungary claimed a hat-trick of gold medals on the final day of swimming at the 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Tbilisi.

The opening final of the day pitted the Hungary’s Fanni Gyurinovics and Janja Segal, the gold medallists in the girl’s 200 metres individual medley and 100m freestyle events, against each other in the 50m freestyle event.

Gyurinovics touched home in 25.95sec to secure her second gold of the Festival, with Segal taking the silver in 26.29 and The Netherlands’ Loulou Janssen clinched bronze, stopping the clock in 26.40.

Hungary’s second success for the day was secured in the girl’s 100m butterfly as Petra Barocsai posted a time of 1min 01.46sec to take the victory, with Ireland’s Ellen Walshe finishing as the runner-up in 1:02.17.

Ajna Evelin Kesely, undoubtedly the star athlete of the Festival having already won three golds and one silver medal, added to Hungary’s and her personal tally by triumphing in the 200m freestyle final, posting a time of 2:01.84.

The last remaining girl’s individual gold was earned by Germany’s Anna Fehlinger as she won the 200m breaststroke final in 2:33.48.

Russia also earned success in the New Tbilisi Swimming Pool as Dmitry Popov and Pavel Tatarenko earned victories in the boy’s 200m butterfly and backstroke finals, posting times of 2:00.86 and 2:03.21 in their respective events.

There was also a gold for Moldova’s Alexei Sancov after her posted a time of 50.90 to win the boy’s 100m freestyle final, but he had to settle for silver in the 1500m as Spain’s Cesar Castro Valle took gold in 15:24.02.

Italy were able to take gold in the boy’s 4x100m medley relay, posting a time of 3:46.15, before the meet was completed by girl’s event, which Slovenia secured in 4:15.53.

Elsewhere, France secured three athletics golds with Julian Andrianavalona winning gold in the boy’s 110m hurdles in a time of 13.84 to add victories for Florian Barbier and Marine Mignon in the boy’s and girl’s 200m finals, posting times of 21.52 and 24.07 respectively.

The final event on the track on the fifth day of the festival saw Romania’s Andrea Miklos take victory in the girl’s 400m in a personal best time of 53.68.

Finland’s Arttu Korkeasalo, meanwhile, earned the boy’s shot put title with an effort of 18.98 metres.

The home crowd were left disappointed as, having had judo success in recent days, they were not represented in any of the three divisions to take place on the penultimate day action in the sport.

In their host’s absence Serbia’s Jovanna Obradovic and Italy’s Alice Bellandi earned titles in the girl’s under 63 and 70 kilogram division categories, while Murad Kurbanismailov took gold for Russia in the boy’s under 81kg event.

Russia also earned success in gymnastics as Aleksander Sychugov defeated the all-around champion Joe Fraser in pommel horse in the boy’s pommel horse final by scoring 14.700 points.

France’s Marine Boyer won the girl’s vault final after being awarded a score of 14.275 points.
