Norway’s Suzann Pettersen enjoys a two-shot lead at the end of the second day of competition Women’s British Open at Turnberry in Scotland.

The 2014 runner-up was one of nine players to begin the day three shots off the lead of South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim and she was able to make use of the relatively calm early morning conditions to produce an excellent round.

Three birdies and one bogey in the front nine saw Pettersen move to six-under-par for the tournament and, as the wind began to pick up on the course, she produced a solid final nine holes of the round with one birdie and eight pars seeing the Norwegian enter the clubhouse with the lead on seven-under-par.

“Today was a very solid round of golf,” she said.

“I felt I was in 100 per cent control of the ball, the flight, the spin; everything you need to do in conditions like this.

“So this ranks pretty high as a good round of golf.”

Pettersen may have been able to rest for the remainder of the day after her strong round but several of her rivals’ challenges faded as the increasingly strong wind and rain began to cause problems for many golfers on the course.

Among those were the 2015 Women's PGA Championship winner Inbee Park of South Korea, who dropped to two-under-par, while America’s Michelle Wie was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to struggling with an ankle injury.

One of those to really suffer was the overnight leader Kim, as the 20-year-old endured a six-over-par round of 78, to drop down the standings to end the day on one-under-par.

Kim faltered but fellow South Koreans Jin Young Ko and So Yeon Ryu delivered solid rounds to remain in contention on five-under-par and share second place on the leaderboard with New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and Chinese Taipei’s Teresa Lu at the halfway point of the tournament.
