Australia won four gold medals as the International Cycling Union (UCI) Para-cycling Road World Cup in Elzach, Germany, came to a close.

Susan Powell was the first of Australia’s three female winners, claiming the C4 title with a time of 1 hour 34min 49sec as the United States’ Shawn Morelli and Megan Fisher took silver and bronze respectively.

This was followed by success for Carol Cooke in the T2 class, clocking 56min 46sec to finish ahead of America's Jill Walsh in second and Germany’s Jana Majunke, the current UCI world rankings leader, in third.

Bianca Woolford then posted a time of 40:14 to win the T1 class, a two-horse race in which Russia’s Yulia Sibagatova had to settle for the runners-up spot.

Australia’s other gold medal came courtesy of Alistair Donohoe’s triumph in the men’s C5 class, crossing the line with a time of 1:40:06 to beat out Brazil’s Lauro Cesar Chaman in a sprint final and earn his third win of the season.

Donohoe’s compatriot Michael Gallagher finished just five seconds behind the sprinting duo to secure the bronze medal.

Hosts Germany won two gold medals thanks to Hans-Peter Durst’s continued domination of the men’s T2 class and Pierre Senska’s victory in the men’s C1.

Durst’s time of 54:44 saw him finish a massive 44 seconds ahead of Czech Republic’s David Vondracek in second, while Belgium’s Tim Celen came away with bronze.

It marks the fourth time this season that the 57-year-old Durst, who tops the international rankings, has secured victory.

As for Senska, a time of 1:26:38 proved enough for top honours with teammate Michael Teuber and The Netherlands’ Arnoud Nijhuis in second and third respectively.

Elsewhere on the final day of action, Slovakia’s Jozef Metelka recovered from the disappointment of missing out on the C4 time trial podium to win the 69 kilometres road race after a four-way sprint to the line.

Sandwiched between Metelka and bronze medal-winning compatriot Patrik Kuril was Russia’s Sergey Pudov, the winner of the time trial on Friday (July 24), while Romania’s Carol-Eduard Novak just missed out on a podium place.

The Netherlands claimed the men’s and women’s tandem racing double with Vincent Ter Schure and pilot Timo Fransen coming out on top in the former, and Anouk Van Bommel and pilot Sigrid Jochems winning the latter.

There were also gold medals for Russia’s Sergey Semochkin in the men’s T1, as well as Czech Republic’s Ivo Koblasa in the men’s C2 and Poland’s Anna Harkowska in the women’s C5.

In the absence of Italy, winners of the mixed hand cycling relay in Maniago and Yverdon-les-Bains last month, the US won gold ahead of Belgium and Germany.

Attention now turns to the World Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland, scheduled to take place from Wednesday (July 29) to Sunday (August 2).

Stage four of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup is due to be held in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, from September 11 to 13.
