Ustinov benefitted from the absence of Italy’s Fabio Anobile, current leader of the world rankings and winner of last month’s road races in Maniago and Yverdon-les-Bains, to win with a time of 1 hour 50min 27sec and add to the bronze medal he won in yesterday’s time trial.

Belgium’s Kris Bosmans and Ireland’s Eoghan Clifford, winner of yesterday’s time trial, finished second and third respectively with the top eight all clocking the same time.

The Netherlands’ Jetze Plat and Tim De Vries continued their domination of the men’s H5 category with another one-two finish, while South Africa’s Ernst Van Dyk completed the podium as he did in yesterday’s time trial.

In the men’s H3 class, Germany’s Max Weber and Switzerland’s Heinz Frei, winner of yesterday’s time trial, both finished with a time of 1:18:05 as the former came out on top to add to his road race title in Maniago.

Austria’s Walter Ablinger took third spot, finishing the 46 kilometres course more than a minute later.

There were also wins on the men’s side for Czech Republic’s Patrik Jahoda in the H1 class, as well as for the United States’ William Groulx and Germany’s Vico Merklein in the H2 and H4 categories respectively.

Meanwhile in women’s racing, the US claimed three gold medals starting with Jamie Whitmore Cardenas’ triumph in the C3 class with a time of 1:23:30.

As was the case in yesterday’s time trial, Cardenas was followed across the line by Germany’s Denise Schindler and Australia’s Simone Kennedy in second and third respectively.

Allison Jones posted a winning time of 1:24:51 in the C2 category to finish more than five minutes clear of The Netherlands’ Alyda Norbruis and Czech Republic’s Tereza Diepoldova, while fellow American Alicia Brelsford Dana crossed the line in 1:21:52 to fend off nearest challengers Renata Kaluza of Poland and Czech Republic’s Katerina Antosova.

Two gold medals came the way of hosts Germany as Christian Reppe backed up her H4 time trial success with another victory after compatriot Andrea Eskau had come out on top in the H5 class.

Reppe was followed onto the podium by Russia’s Svetlana Moshkovich and teammate Silke Pan, who took bronze, while the Dutch duo of Laura De Vann and Jennette Jansen had to settle for second and third place behind Eskau.

Wins also went to South Africa’s Justine Asher in the women’s H2 and Australia’s Emilie Miller in the women’s H1 as the only competitors in their categories.

The action in Elzach is due to conclude tomorrow with the second and final day of road races.
