Australian women’s rugby sevens captain Nicole Beck will be the flagbearer for her nation at the Opening Ceremony of the Pacific Games, it has been announced, as  her country prepares to make its inaugural appearance at the event here.

Beck is one of only two members of the Australian team that finished third in the Women’s Rugby Sevens Series, behind Canada and winners New Zealand, taking part in the Papua New Guinean capital.

The sport is one of four that both Australia and New Zealand will compete in at the Pacific Games, along with weightlifting, taekwondo and sailing.

“This is a big surprise,” Beck said.

“It’s a huge honour to be able to carry the flag for Australia.

“I was just very happy to be selected in the team to go to Papua New Guinea and to also captain that team.”

The decision to choose the 27-year-old to carry Australia’s flag at the Opening Ceremony, due to take place at the Sir John Guise Stadium tomorrow, was hailed by Chef de Mission Malcolm Page, who says Beck is a great role model for the rest of the team.

“Nicole exemplifies the principles of an Australian competitor,” he said.

“Being the flagbearer is an honour bestowed upon you.

“Carrying the flag at the Closing Ceremony at the 2012 Olympics was certainly my highlight at London.”

The women’s rugby sevens event in Port Moresby also gives Australia the chance to continue their preparations for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where rugby sevens will be making its debut on the Olympic programme.

They qualified for next year’s Games by virtue of their third place finish in the Women’s Sevens Series competition.

Australia’s team at these Pacific Games will comprise 40 members across the four sports.

The Opening Ceremony itself is set to incorporate traditional Papua New Guinea themes, with the athlete’s parade set to begin at 7:45pm local time.

Instead of walking around the venue, as is usually the case for Opening Ceremonies, the athletes will remain on stage until the event closes at around 9pm local time.
