Port Moresby 2015 have announced St John’s Ambulance as the latest partner of the Pacific Games, due to start here on Saturday (July 4), who will help with medical services throughout the event in the Papua New Guinea capital.

The agreement will see St John’s provide four vehicles at all of the main venues as well as 120 volunteers during the Games, scheduled to end with the Closing Ceremony on July 18.

St John’s will also supply first aid for the Opening Ceremony and rehearsals and will have a strong presence here.

“The Games Organising Committee was very proud to be able to support St John. Ambulance which is such an important service provider and look forward to working together with the organisation to provide First Aid particularly to many thousands of spectators who will be here for the Games,” Port Moresby 2015 chief executive Peter Stewart said.

“I am confident that the spectators will be well taken care of at the venues with St John’s team.’’

The deal has also seen Port Moresby 2015 finance the purchase of medical supplies for the Pacific Games, as well as refurbishment to some of the ambulances that will be used.

As well as providing medical support for the Games St John's Ambulance will also have a presence at rehearsals for the Opening Ceremony at the Sir John Guise Stadium

The agreement was hailed by St John’s Ambulance chief executive Andrew Kalai, who spoke of his pride in being partnered with the 15th Pacific Games, largely expected to be the biggest sporting event ever held in Papua New Guinea.

“Our organisation is very proud to be able to provide this level of care to Games and we are thankful for the opportunity.”

The Games themselves will begin with the Opening Ceremony at the recently-renovated Sir John Guise Stadium, which can now hold around 15,000 people.

Athletes have begun to arrive at the Games Village, with the Cook Islands team the first check in to the facility yesterday.

Members from the delegations of Vanuatu and New Caledonia arrived here today.

Around 3,000 athletes are expected to compete here across 28 different sports during the 15-day event.
