Germany and France halt Czech dominance at Canoe Slalom World Cup

Germany's Jasmin Schornberg and French duo Gauthier Klauss and Matthieu Peche were among the winners on the final day of action at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Slalom World Cup in Prague.

Schornberg, the 29-year-old 2009 world champion from Lippstadt, proved the best of the bunch in a high standard K!W women's competition after seven of the finallists produced a clean run, meaning the podium positions were decided by the speed at which they navigated the course.

The German got the better of Jessica Fox by 0.13 seconds, with the Australian prodigy securing a second silver medal of the weekend after another second place in the C1 event yesterday.

Home hope Katerina Kudejova took bronze.

The result represented a substantial return to form for the winner, who has not even been selected for September's World Championships in London.

“I’m really happy with that as it was a tight race," Schornberg said afterwards.

"I just wanted to improve on my semi and I gained a lot of time.

"It still wasn't perfect, but I was happy at the finish.

“I’m back to myself now, I have more motivation and feel good.

“I have been on the team for 10 years, I had lost my energy so it was good to take a break and breath.”

Last season's World Cup Series winners and world rankings leaders Klauss and Peche, meanwhile, were utterly dominant once again in the C2 event, combining devastating power with pinpoint precision to overcome two strong Czech rivals.

Ondrej Karlovsky and Jakub Jane earned silver ahead of team mates Jonas Kaspar and Marek Sindler.

“It was quite hard at the top part of the course but we are happy with our run,” said Peche afterwards.

Klauss, meanwhile, explained how they are seeking to defend their series title but are prioritising "competitive preparation" ahead of the World Championships.

After triple success yesterday, Czech Republic won another gold medal today in the K1 team event, finishing ahead of Slovenia and Australia, while Poland secured C2 team honours ahead of Czech Republic and Germany.

The next leg of the World Cup season is due to begin in Polish city Kraków next Friday (June 26).
