World Rugby have announced that England will host the 2016 World Rugby Under-20 Championship, with the competition set to take place in two stadiums in Manchester.

Manchester City Academy Stadium and the AJ Bell Stadium, home to the Sale Sharks Rugby Union team will provide the backdrop for the 12-team tournament, which has helped over 340 players move into the international test scene since the tournament began in 2008.

Several of those international will also be on show this Autumn when England hosts the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Rugby Football Untion (RFU) chief executive Ian Ritchie outlined that the Under-20 Championship presents an excellent opportunity to grow the sport in England.

“We are honoured to be hosting the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in England next year,” he said.

“We have a tremendous opportunity to grow the game in this country after October’s tournament, and create a legacy for generations to come.

“The appointment of the Championship to the RFU is another significant step forward in helping us achieve that goal, ensuring that rugby is accessible in all areas of the country.”

With the tournament held set to be held in Manchester, it is hoped that more supporters in the north of England will be able to experience top class rugby.

As the annual tournament's eighth edition prepares to conclude this weekend in Cremona, Italy, World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset believes awarding the 2016 tournament to England will give the next generation of international the perfect stage to progress their careers.

"The Under-20 Championship in England next year will be another excellent opportunity for the future stars of world rugby to showcase their skills on the world stage, following what's shaping up to be a record-breaking Rugby World Cup,” he said.

"Manchester will provide an excellent base for the world's top under-20 teams, and it's a great opportunity to bring a world-class rugby event to the city and grow the game even further in the region.

"With so many graduates of the Under-20 Championship now excelling in the international test arena, this tournament, coupled with the Rugby World Cup, will leave a great legacy for others to build on in the years to come.”

England are the current holders of the competition and will be hoping to retain their title at the 2015 edition as they face New Zealand in the final in Cremona on Saturday (June 20), with a victory seeing them head into their home tournament as defending champions.

Dates and times for the 2016 World Rugby Under 20 Championship will be announced at a later date.
