Spain have announced a 21-strong team for the 2015 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships set to be held from July 13 to 19 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The squad includes several multiple Paralympic and World Championship medallists including Teresa Perales who has earned 22 Paralympic medals throughout her illustrious career.

Despite her achievements Perales is yet to win a World Championship medal but the 39-year-old will be one of Spain’s major medal hopefuls at the Championship.

Additionally Sarai Gascon will head to the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, which was the home of aquatic competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The 39-year-old will be attempting to defend the 50 metre freestyle gold medal which she won in the S9 classification at the 2013 Championships in Montreal, Canada, while Michelle Alonso will hope to retain the 100m breaststroke SB14 title.

Richardo Ten, Richard Oribe and Israel Oliver will also carry Spanish hopes having medalled in Paralympic Games and world championships in the past, with Oliver set to defend his 200m medley SM11 title in Glasgow.

The team continued their preparations at last week’s National Championships, held from June 6 to 7 in Mataro, which saw 14 national records broken across the two days of competition.

Among the winners at the Championship was Jose Faustino Afonso who earned five golds, as well as Castello and Tajuelo, while Ander Romarate and David Levecq claimed four titles each.

They will also be joined in Glasgow by several youngsters including Nuria Marques, Maria Delgado and Oscar Salguero, who medalled at last year’s IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, as well as Edo and Ivan Ariadna Salguero.

Tajuelo Miguel Angel Martinez, Julia Castello, Marta Gomez, Isabel and Antonio Hernadez Ponce Yinghua who have all have previous experience of competing at international level were also named in the squad.

Spain will hope to improve on their showing at the 2013 World Championships, where they finished fourteenth on the medals table having earned four gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.
