The top-seed successfully defended his singles crown with the loss of only three games across three matches, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the final against home favourite Stéphane Houdet, who he beat in last year’s final.

Meanwhile in the doubles, Kunieda partnered Great Britain’s Gordon Reid as the second seeds defeated Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez and France’s Nicolas Peifer 6-1, 7-6 in the final.

The wheelchair tennis legend now has 19 singles and 19 doubles titles to his name.

“I am satisfied about my game and I could win how I wanted to,” said Kunieda.

“It is only the top eight players coming here, so every player is tough and has a chance to win.”

On the women’s side, The Netherlands’ Jiske Griffioen also claimed a pair of titles, headlined by her singles success.

Having won her first-ever Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January, Griffioen overcame compatriot and doubles partner Aniek van Koot, 6-0, 6-2.

The new world number one faced little resistance from Van Koot, who recently returned from a shoulder injury and didn’t manage to win a game until the second set opener.

Despite holding serve in the seventh game, Van Koot never really troubled Griffioen, who is now eagerly anticipating August’s United States Open, where a singles victory would earn her a calendar Grand Slam.

“These are my first two and it would be great to add another one at the US Open,” she said.

Griffioen went on to team up with Van Koot, as the second seeds claimed the doubles title with a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 win at the expense of Japan’s Yui Kamiji and Britain’s Jordanne Whiley.
