Port Moresby 2015 have announced three of the main venues for this year’s Pacific Games in the Papua New Guinean capital have been temporarily renamed.

The Sir John Guise Outdoor Stadium, due to host the Opening Ceremony on July 4 attended by Prince Andrew, will be known as the Bank South Pacific Stadium throughout the two-week long event.

The company are the principal sponsor of the Games and they have also attached their name to the Taurama Aquatic Center, which will temporarily be called the BSP Arena.

Meanwhile, the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium becomes the PNG Power Dome for the event.

Port Moresby 2015 chief executive Peter Stewart heralded the support of their corporate sponsors.

“The temporary naming of these stadia during the Games period, gives due recognition for the wonderful support that BSP Bank and PNG Power are providing to the success of the Games,” he said.

“Without the support of these two companies together with the other 20 Games sponsors, we could not provide the level of service and facilities that the athletes of the Pacific deserve to compete at their best.”

Once the Games conclude on July 18, the venues will revert to their original names and Port Moresby say they “will continue to serve the community”.

National Gaming Control Board recently became the latest sponsor of the Pacific Games and they join the likes of Ok Tedi Mining, Telikom PNG, SP Brewery, PNG Power and Puma Energy in partnering with the Games as platinum partners.

Other companies who have associated themselves with the Games include JDA Applus Velosi, Brian Bell Homecentres, Air Niugini, EMTEK, Daltron, Petromin, MRDC, Steamships, Coca Cola, Fuji Xerox Business Centre, Hertz and Moore Printing.

Port Moresby 2015 claim over K64 million (£15 million/$23.5 million/€21 million) has been raised through sponsors for the Games so far.

The event itself is set to be the biggest in Papua New Guinea’s history and around 3,000 athletes from 23 nations are due to compete across 28 different sports at the 15th Pacific Games, scheduled to take place until July 18.
