Australia’s Bill Chaffey collected his first world Para-triathlon title of the year at the fifth time of asking after coming out on top in the men’s PT1 event at London’s Hyde Park.

The four-time world champion, who has been training in Europe since competing in Madrid last month, produced both the fastest swim and hand cycle of the day on his way to victory.

“I was disappointed last year, I broke my hip just a day ahead of when I was supposed to leave for World Championships, but I think I’m back on track and even a bit in front of where I was last year,” he said afterwards.

“The competition is really high.

“There are more competitors than ever, the racing is tougher, which means I’ve got to be tougher.”

There were also gold medals for home favourites Lauren Steadman and Melissa Reid, who won the women’s PT4 and PT5 titles respectively.

Reigning world champion Steadman continued her winning form and campaign for Rio 2016, finishing ahead of compatriot Clare Cunningham, who joined Steadman on the podium at last year’s World Championships.

“I was a bit disappointed with the swim, but the bike and run went well,” she said.

“I like the course and obviously it’s London.

“I had a lot of family here today and I could see them on the side, so it was quite nice.”

Meanwhile, Reid ran ahead of long-time race leader, Joleen Hakker of The Netherlands, on the three-lap run to take victory.

Another Briton Jack Peasgood was on the wrong end of a late turned around in the men’s PT4 as Canada’s Stefan Daniel burst in front on the run despite trailing on the swim and bike.

Poland’s Łukasz Wietecki secured his second men’s PT5 title just weeks after his first success in Yokohama, while the United States’ Mary Catherine Callahan also doubled up her tally by winning the women’s PT1.

Italy’s Michele Ferrarin held off a strong challenge from Russia’s Vasily Egorov on the run to take the men’s PT2 crown, while Spain took gold and silver in the men’s PT3 courtesy of Alejandro Sanchez Palomero and Daniel Molina respectively.

In the women’s sport class, The Netherlands’ Saskia Van Den Ouden retained her title with the fastest run split by more than three minutes.
