Astana Arlans Kazakhstan booked their place in their third World Series of Boxing final with a thumping 9-1 aggregate win over the Russian Boxing Team.

The Kazakh outfit held a commanding 5-0 advantage from last night's first leg and they knew only one point was required from the second night of action in Astana if they were to seal a spot in the showpiece finale.

The second leg was, despite the resounding 4-1 scoreline, much closer than the previous night but the Arlans proved too strong with another confident performance to set up a clash with Series favourites and defending champions Cuba Domadores in the final.

In fact, any feint hopes of a miraculous Russian comeback were dashed in the opening fight of the night as flyweight Olzhas Sattibayev beat Karen Arutiunian of Russia by virtue of a unanimous decision to seal the Kazakh side’s qualification.

Lightweight Zakir Safiullin then doubled the host’s lead in the second bout as he edged out Artur Subkhankulov in what was a gripping contest.

Despite the fate of both teams having already been sealed, both boxers put on an excellent show for the raucous home crowd and Safiullin was made to work hard by his Russian opponent before he took victory by just a single point on all three scorecards.

The 2013 world champion Daniyar Yeleussinov of the Astana Arlans was involved in perhaps the closest contest of the evening as he managed to extend his team’s lead to 3-0 with a split decision win over Russian debutant Iagub Nuriev in their welterweight clash.

Nuriev, making his first appearance of the season, stuttered in the early stages and lost the first two rounds before he launched a stunning revival, pushing his more experienced campaigner all the way.

He looked to have Yeleussinov on the ropes as the bout veered towards its climax and the two became involved in somewhat of a brawl, but it was the Kazakh fighter who held on to claim the win on two scorecards to deny Nuriev what would have been one of the biggest shocks in World Series of Boxing history.

Russian Boxing Team managed to get on the scoreboard for the first time in the semi-final thanks to Eduard Yakushev’s victory against Nurdaulet Zharmanov in the light heavyweight division.

Normal service was resumed in the last bout of the night when super heavyweight Ivan Dychko stopped Russia’s Ruslan Shamalov to wrap up another excellent outing for the Kazakh team.

They have now won 15 out of 16 matches and will surely test the rampant Domadores when they meet in the final.
