Dutchman Koen Ridder, Japan’s Shintaro Ikeda and China's Tang Yuanting have become the latest players to be elected to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission, the sport’s governing body has announced.

Ikeda and Ridder were elected after gaining the most votes, while Tang Yuanting of China was given a place by virtue of being the only female nominee.

Ikeda led the votes with 69, and Ridder received 65.

South African Prakash Vijayanath missed out on 44 votes, while China’s Zhang Nan was fifth after amassing 33.

All three were chosen in the Chinese city of Dongguan during the ongoing Vivo BWF Sudirman Cup 2015 event, which involves players from 35 countries.

Each will serve a four-year term on the Commission.

Ikeda, Yuanting and Ridder join the likes of Belgium’s Yuhan Tan, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark and Indonesian Greysia Polii, who are all halfway through their four-year stints.

Greysia was elected on to the Commission in March 2013 despite being one of the eight players disqualified for allegedly throwing their matches at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“The Athlete’s Commission serves an important purpose within the BWF as it represents one of badminton’s key stakeholder groups - the players,” BWF secretary general Thomas Lund said.

Lund also thanked the outgoing members, who included chair Emma Mason of Scotland, Peru’s Rodrigo Pacheco and Korea’s Lee Yong Dae, who was unsuccessful in securing a second term.

Elections take place every two years and the Athletes' Commission, set up in 2008, is seen as an integral tool for the sport as it gives the sport’s players the chance to put their views forward to the BWF.
