South Korea’s Kang Chae Young claimed a superb haul of three recurve gold medals on a dominant day for her nation as the first Archery World Cup of the season came to a close in Shanghai.

Chae Young began the day as she meant to go on as she was part of the South Korean trio, which also included Ki Bo Bae and Choi Misun, who produced a commanding performance by thrashing Germany 6-0 to claim the women’s team title.

She then teamed up with Ku Bonchan, the eventual winner of the men’s individual gold, to secure the mixed crown as they proved too strong for the Japanese pair of Kaori Kawanaka and Takaharu Furukawa.

Chae Young managed to seal a commanding hat-trick of golds on the final day in the Chinese city with a dominant 6-2 victory over compatriot Choi Misun in the women’s individual event .

“I can’t really believe it,” she said.

“I was a little nervous in the team match, but much more relaxed against Choi, of course.”

Ku Bonchan, meanwhile, also claimed a personal double as, after winning the mixed team event with Chae Young, he managed to edge a tight affair with teammate Kim Woo-jin by a 6-4 scoreline to clinch the men’s individual title.

In what was a topsy-turvy match-up between the two Korean archers, Ku shot three straight tens to start the final in commanding fashion, but a wayward six in the second end let Kim back into the contest.

He eventually got the better of Kim as he claimed his first gold medal on the circuit, and he revelled in his performance on a bumper day of action.

“The six was annoying: I hadn’t quite set my sight pin for the wind on the practice field, but I adjusted quickly,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to Antalya - it was my favourite World Cup venue last year and of course I’d like to be world champion.”

The Japanese men, however, ensured South Korea could not claim a sweep of all of the gold medals available as they won a tense team final between the two sides.

The trio of Furukawa, Naoya Oniyama and Ayumi Iwata got the better of the favourites, who featured Ku and Kim as well as Oh Jin-Hyek, with a 5-1 win.

Men’s team bronze went to Indonesia’s Hendra Purnama, Muhammad Hanif Wijaya and Ega Agatha Riau, who also finished the day with two medals after he sealed third place in the individual competition.

Khatuna Lorig, LaNola Pritchard and Ariel Gibilaro won women’s team bronze for The United States, while Olympic champion Ki Bo Bae did finish with some success after she was victorious in her bronze medal contest with Katrina Winter of Germany.

Mexico’s Aida Roman and Juan Rene Serrano secured their nation’s lone medal of the day with mixed team bronze.

The next Archery World Cup event is due to place in the Turkish resort of Antalya from May 26 to 31.
