Szabolcs Krizsan came out on top in an all-Hungarian men’s under 81 kilogram final at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Zagreb today.

Krizsan got the better of compatriot Laszlo Csoknyai in the gold medal match, having recorded a semi-final victory against Russia’s Khasan Khalmurzaev, one of the two third-place finishers along with The Netherlands’ Frank De Wit.

Khalmurzaev overcame Georgia’s Zebeda Rekhviashvili in the first bronze medal match before De Wit defeated Italy’s Antonio Ciano.

Meanwhile in the men’s under 73kg category, Georgia’s Lasha Shavdatuashvili beat Mongolia’s Tsagaanbaatar Khashbaatar to claim the gold medal, while France’s Pierre Duprat and Israel’s Sagi Muki took the bronze medals after wins against Belgium’s Sami Chouchi and The Netherlands’ Dex Elmont respectively.

In the women’s under 63kg category final, France’s Clarisse Agbegnenou, the reigning world champion, lost out to Slovenia's Tina Trstenjak.

The number one seed, Israel’s Yarden Gerbi, had to settle for bronze medal which she achieved by overcoming Poland’s Agata Ozdoba, and she was joined on the third step of the podium by Italy’s Edwige Gwend, who won against Germany’s Martyna Trajdos in the other bronze medal match.

Pan American champion Kelita Zupancic came away from Zagreb with the women’s under 70kg gold medal last year, but the Canadian could only manage a bronze medal this time round as Great Britain’s Sally Conway suffered defeat at the hands of Israel’s Linda Bolder in the final.

Zupancic overcame Poland’s Katarzyna Klys in the first bronze medal match, before France’s Fanny Estelle Posvite triumphed against Germany’s Szaundra Diedrich, who won the Tbilisi Grand Prix in March.

The action in Zagreb concludes tomorrow with the men’s under 90kg, under 100kg and over 100kg categories, and the women’s under 78kg and over 78kg classes.
