Home favourite Jianwen Hu broke the long jump world record on a dominant opening day for China at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix in Beijing.

The 27-year-old leapt 6.79 metres in the men’s T38, adding an impressive 31 centimetres onto the previous record set by South African Dyan Buis in 2012.

Earlier in the day, Hu claimed victory in the 100 metres T38 event, finishing ahead of Paralympic bronze medallist Wenjun Zhouand.

Stopping the clock at 11.18sec, he also beat Zhou’s Asian record time by 0.04 in the process.

Hu’s compatriot, Asian Para Games champion Bingbing Jiang, maintained his winning ways with victory in the 100m T13, clocking 11.60, while fellow countryman Yongbin Liang enjoyed a convincing win in the 100m T37, finishing in 11.79, and Paralympic bronze medallist Shiran Yu crossed the line in 15.36 to take victory in the 100m T53.

China also enjoyed a clean sweep of victories in the women’s sprints as Paralympic and world champion Guohua Zhou won the 100m T12 in 12.14, and world bronze medallist Junfei Chen bettered her own 100m T38 Asian record, clocking 13.48.

Yingli Li was first across the line in the 100m T37 in a time of 14.42, just 0.01 outside the Asian record she set at the Asian Para Games in Incheon last year.

The home nation’s dominance continued in the middle-distance events as Fusen Yu claimed victory in the men’s 800m T53 event in 1min 46.41sec, and double world champion Hongzhuan Zhou outdid her compatriot Lisha Huang in the women’s equivalent, improving her own Asian record to win in 1:51.01.

Paralympic bronze medallist Lihong Zou won the women’s 800m T54 in 1:52.05, narrowly ahead of Asian Para Games champion Wenjun Liu, while compatriot Chengming Liu won the men’s race in 1:37.42.

Zou went on to clinch her second victory of the day in the women’s 5,000m T53/54, crossing the line in 11:54.28 to finish ahead of Zhou and Huang, second and third respectively.

Asian Para Games champion Cuiqing Liu made her intentions clear for the year ahead as she saw off her compatriot Yan Chen in the 400m T11 with a time of 57.93.

The 23-year-old added victory in the 100m T11 later in the day, clocking 12.15, an Asian record.

There was a double victory as well for China’s Fei Teng who ran 1:19.19 to win the 400m T13 before clocking 5:16.91 as she triumphed in the women’s 1500m T11/13 later in the day.

China did not let up either out in the field, as Hewei Dong overcame a tough field, including 2011 world silver medallist Hongjie Chen, to win the high jump T12/42/46/47 with a second-time clearance of 1.84 metres.

Asian record holder Qing Wu saved her best until last in the women’s javelin F36/37/46, throwing 28.87m to win with 984 points, while Yuping Zhao prevailed in the women’s javelin F11/12/13 with a score of 913.

China also dominated the women’s shot put F11/12 with Hongxia Tang scoring 1040 points to take the win, as Shusheng Zhang managed a penultimate throw of 11.92m to comfortably win the men’s shot put F11/12/13.

Victory went to form in the women’s discus F33/54/55/56/57 as Paralympic shot put and javelin champion Liwan Yang threw 16.60m to score 965 points - nearly double the score of second-placed Sara Hamdi Masoud of Qatar.
