American Gwen Jorgensen made International Triathlon Union (ITU) history by claiming her eighth consecutive World Triathlon Series victory, the longest winning streak since the event began, while Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee clinched victory in the men’s race in the Gold Coast.

Jorgensen, the overall champion in 2014 after winning five events, continued her fine start to the defence of the title, having won the opening races of the season in Abu Dhabi and Auckland.

After the swim had failed to break up the field, Jorgensen was key to the establishment of an eight-woman breakaway on the bike leg in Gold Coast, as she attempted to continue her unblemished record this season.

Despite her exertions on the bike and being forced to serve a 15-second penalty for an infringement in transition, Jorgensen dominated the run to take the victory in 1 hour 57min 00sec, the result consolidating her position at the top of the overall standings on 2,400 points.

An American clean sweep was completed by Sarah True who finished second in in 1:58:17, while Katie Zaferes’ posted a time of 1:58.25, to maintain her second place position in the overall rankings, however is already someway adrift of Jorgensen on 2,165 points.

Brownlee, the Olympic bronze medallist tops the men’s standings on 2,186 points, ahead of Javier Gomez Noya and Mario Mola of Spain, after backing up his win in Auckland with another triumph in Gold Coast.

The Briton formed part of a four-man breakaway after the swim and the group pushed on the bike leg, as Brownlee moved clear of his main rivals, including Mola, Gomez Noya and Vincente Hernandez.

Despite the Spanish trio’s best efforts they were unable to prevent Brownlee from taking his tenth World Triathlon Series victory in 1:46.53.

“At the start of the season I had an awful race, it was a bit of a shock really because I got a lot of things wrong so I knew I did not want to make those mistakes again,” Brownlee said following his victory.

“Today it started really well, had a great start in the swim, had to get around a few people to get on Richard Varga’s feet and then we had a gap, I saw the four of us and knew I just had to ride aggressive and on tempo.

“On my run I knew that if I could be steady and get them behind me by thirty then it was going to take a great run to catch me but luckily they didn’t.”

Mola posted a time of 1:47.11 to finish second, with Gomez finishing five seconds ahead of his fellow Spaniard Hernandez in 1:47.21.

Cape Town in South Africa is set to stage the fourth leg of the 10 event series, on April 25 and April 26.
