Cape Town Stadium will host the South African leg of the World Rugby Seven Series from 2015-2016 ©WikipediaCape Town in South Africa has become the latest city to be announced as a World Rugby Sevens Series host in the 2015-2016 season.

The South African leg of the series has previously been held in Port Elizabeth since 2011, but for the next four years fans will be able to watch the action in the 55,000-capacity, Cape Town Stadium, which was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

"Cape Town is one of the world's iconic cities - a major tourism and sporting destination that has proven to be an exceptional and warm host," said World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset.

"It's inclusion within a stellar World Rugby Seven Series schedule is exciting for fans around the world.

"I am confident that the South Africa Sevens in Cape Town will inspire new audiences and participants and contribute to the continued strong growth of rugby in South Africa and around the world."

South Africa currently lead the World Rugby Seven's Series, including a victory in their home leg of the 10 destination series, and South Africa Rugby Union chief executive Jurie Roux believes that the move to city will help continue the growth of rugby sevens in his country.

"Cape Town is sports-mad and their crowds frequently top the attendance charts in South Africa and it is a rugby city," Roux stated, who recently declared South Africa's interest in hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

"The fan walk to the Stadium and the proximity of entertainment areas such as the V&A Waterfront are an added bonus and will capture and amplify unique vibe sevens rugby."

Cape Town is set to join Vancouver in Canada and Sydney in Australia as a new venue for next year's edition of the World Rugby Sevens, with the sport set to make its Olympic debut at Rio 2016.

"With excitement increasing ahead of Rio 2016, the World Rugby Sevens Series is going from strength to strength, proving a hit with fans, broadcasters and sponsors around the globe with its winning blend of compelling and competitive action, global destinations and festival atmosphere," Lapasset added.
