The Governor hosted the event to show his support for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and he delivered the Commonwealth Day message on from Her Majesty the Queen.

The selected athletes are considered to be some of South East Queensland's most outstanding young talents with their ages ranging from between 14 and 21-years-old.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday of March every year, with "A Young Commonwealth" selected as this year's theme.

The theme focuses on the potential of young people and refers to the fact that the majority of the Commonwealth's population are less than 29-years-old.

Queensland's Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones was among who attended the event.

"The Games will bring tremendous benefits to Queensland and will inspire a generation of young athletes to work hard and pursue their dreams of competing at an intentional level," she said.

"We're almost three years out from the Gold Coast Games and it's great to see so many aspiring athletes excited about the event and training hard so they can make it there to compete.

"I hope to see many of the faces here today again on the Gold Coast in 2018."

Gold Coast 2018 chairman Nigel Chamier claimed the athletes represented all of the 17 sports due to appear on the programme, including Para-sport events athletics, lawn bowls, swimming or powerlifting.

"Commonwealth leaders agree the day should be used to promote knowledge of the Commonwealth particularly among the young people of their countries," he said.

"As such, [Gold Coast 2018] could not think of a more fitting way to celebrate in Queensland than to assemble so many of our own stars of the future."

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held from April 4 to 18.
