Brisbane's Lord Mayor Graham Quirk confirmed that the potential bid from the region had received the unanimous support of 11 of South East Queensland's councils.

However the feasibility study would not be undertaken urgently as official expressions of interest would not be required until January 2019, while a formal bid would not be due until that September.

"This is not something that's going to be occurring overnight," Quirk told the Queensland Times.

"There is a long, long way to go in terms of this journey.

"As a region we have a great offering and we believe that collectively we ought to now commence discussions at other levels."

A proposal by Brisbane would require Federal and State Government support before the bid would need to be put before the Australian Olympic Committee.

Brisbane previously bid to host the Summer Olympic Games in 1992, but lost out in the ballot phase to Barcelona and if they were successful in 2028, it would be the third time that Australia have hosted the Olympics after Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.

Nearby Gold Coast is also hosting the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games.

Quirk confirmed that he hopes to meet with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach concerning a potential bid, which could happen during the German's visit to Australia next month as part of a regional tour that will also see him attend the Oceania National Olympic Committee General Assembly in Suva, Fiji from April 28 to May 2.

Bach has reportedly said that three Australian cities, including Brisbane, had the infrastructure required to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games before encouraging them to bid for either the 2024 or 2028 edition.

Boston in the United States and the Italian capital Rome have already declared their intentions to run for 2024 with Germany set to consider whether to put forward Berlin or Hamburg, with a 2028 German bid also being considered.

Other potential bids may come from Baku, Budapest, Doha, Istanbul and Paris, with many of these cities potential contenders four years later as well.
