Although co-hosts Australia and New Zealand are still seen as the favourites to win the 14-team competition in many quarters, South Africa are rapidly rising up the ranks of contenders, predominantly due to a batting line-up among the most destructive in the sport's history.

While AB De Villiers was the star with the fastest ever one day international (ODI) 150 in their last match against West Indies, this time it was Hashim Amla who led the way with a 128 ball 159 to become the quickest player to 20 ODI centuries, in just 108 games.

Faf du Plessis also scored 109 as part of a South African record stand of 247 for the second wicket with Amla, while a rapid unbeaten 30-ball 61 from Rilee Rossouw contributed to a total score of 411-4 off their 50 overs.

In response, Ireland collapsed to 48-5 and from there it was a case of damage limitation, although they will be pleased with their resilience from that point.

The European side were eventually bowled out for 210 in 45 overs, with Andrew Balbirnie top scoring with 58.

Kyle Abbott claimed 4-21 while fellow paceman Morne Morkel took 3-34 as South Africa's seam attack proved they are far from just a batting-orientated team.

"We did it our way," said captain De Villiers, who scored just 24 off nine balls today.

"We have made a lot of hundreds over the past 12-15 months and we are very proud of that.

"Amla is still the rock and will always be that for us."

South Africa now require just one nwin from their remaiing two group games, against Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Ireland, despite their loss, remain well placed to qualify after excellent earlier victories over West Indies and UAE.

They will be looking for a third victory against Zimbabwe in Hobart on Saturday (March 7).

Tomorrow's sees Australia face Afghanistan in Perth in Pool A, while Pakistan clash with UAE in Napier in Pool B.
