The World Curling Federation have announced Lucerne will host the 2016 World Wheelchair Curling Championships WCFThe 2016 World Wheelchair Curling Championships will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland, it was announced today.

The Championships will take place in the in Eiszentrum Luzern, a multi-sport venue near Lake Lucerne, and are due to start on February 21 and run through until February 28.

Switzerland will also play host to the 2015 World Mixed Curling Championship, which are set to be staged in the capital city Berne, while Basel will host next year's World Men's Curling Championship.

"It is certainly going to be an exciting curling season for Switzerland with three World Curling Championship events being held across the country," World Curling Federation (WCF) President Kate Caithness said.

"This World Wheelchair Curling Championship will be a particularly exciting event as, in addition to teams playing for the world title, it is also the second opportunity for them to gain qualification points towards the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

"With Switzerland's long association with our sport, they have proven time and time again how successful they are at hosting international curling events and I'm sure that the World Wheelchair Curling Championship 2016 will be no exception."

The event in Lucerne will be the fourth time Switzerland has hosted the World Wheelchair Curling Championships after Sursee staged the competition in 2002, 2004 and 2008.

"We are very proud to host the World Wheelchair Curling Championships once more in Switzerland," chairman of the Local Organising Committee Bruno Schallberger said.

"This event will help develop the sport of wheelchair curling in Switzerland.

"I'm certain that the people of Lucerne will offer all visitors an unforgettable experience during their time in the city and we are all extremely excited to welcome everyone to our country."

The news comes just days before the start of the 2015 World Wheelchair Curling Championships, which are due to begin in Lohja, Finland, on Saturday (February 7) and last until February 13.

The final standings at that event will play a major part in qualification as the top-ranked teams will join Switzerland in booking their place for next year's competition, while the rest of the spots will be determined by the results of the World Wheelchair Curling Championships qualification event in Lohja in November.
