Kamil Stoch recorded his first World Cup win of the season to the delight of the home crowd ©AFP/Getty ImagesDouble Olympic ski jumping champion Kamil Stoch leapt to victory at the International Skiing Federation (FIS) World Cup event in Zakopane, Poland.


Roared on by a vocal home crowd Stoch recorded jumps of 134 and 133 metres to end the competition on a total of 276.2 points, meaning the Pole finished ahead of Four Hills Tournament winner Stefan Kraft of Austria.

Kraft struggled in the team competition, but produced better form in achieving the silver medal, with jumps of 133 and 133.5m respectively, reaching 273.9 points for the competition.

The podium was rounded off by World Champion Severin Freund who was able to edge Peter Prevc by 2.6 points to take the bronze.

"Thanks to the fans here in Zakopane," the home favourite Stoch said.

"It was my dream to sing the Polish anthem together with the spectators today.

"With this win I accomplished my first goal this season."

Kraft's second place finish sees him extend his lead at the top of the overall World Cup rankings ahead of Michael Hayboeck.

Following the competition in Poland the runner-up doffed his hat to the winner, admitting: "the best won today, congratulations to Kamil".

"It was a fantastic competition," he added.

"There was almost no wind and the conditions were the same for everyone."
