The success of a wheelchair basketball exhibition game has been hailed by the Gambian National Paralympic Committee ©GNPCA wheelchair basketball exhibition game at the Gambian 2014 National Youth Conference and Festival has been widely praised by leading political and sporting figures from the West African country.


It was the first time that Para-sport had been represented at the Conference, a bi-annual event which is known as the biggest youth gathering in Gambia, with Gambian National Paralympic Committee President Sulayman Colley predicting this will help to raise the profile further. 

"This is what we have been yearning for years, so what we are hoping now is that the regions that are here and see what we are able to do by producing two wheelchair basketball teams from Banjul and Kanifing," he said.

"We hope the regions will incorporate sports for people with an impairment by the next Conference."

The country, which withdrew from the Commonwealth in 2013, made its Paralympic debut at London 2012, where wheelchair racers Damba Jarju and Isatou Nyang each competed in two track athletics events.

Each was eliminated in the heats of both of their events.

But the country is now striving to widen its participation at Rio 2016, with Minister for Youth and Sports Alieu Kebba Jammeh keen to point out the desire of the authorities to embrace all section of society.

"It shows that the Government of Gambia has in mind everyone, wherever you are, whoever you are, and in whatever situation you are, because everyone has a stake in the national development efforts," he said.

The official, who was also present at the Conference, point out the large crowd which attended the exhibition match as evidence that the wider population shares this inclusive mindset.
