The two goals from Christopher Wesley and Florian Fuchs in the Indian city were enough to give the London 2012 Olympic champions their first win in this tournament since the 2007 edition.

Germany controlled for the majority of the game, with Wesley scoring first in the 18th minute at the Kalinga stadium.

Pakistan tried to fight back but Fuchs' goal in the 57th minute sealed their fate.

Pakistan were playing without both Amjad Ali and Mohammad Tousiq, who had been banned by the International Hockey Federation from competing in the final after they made indecent gestures towards Indian spectators following their team's win over the hosts yesterday.

A third player, Shafqat Rasool, was reprimanded for the same offence.

Pakistan coach Shahnaz Sheikh has since issued an apology on behalf of the Pakistan Hockey Federation.

Earlier in the day, Australia claimed the bronze medal with a 2-1 triumph over hosts India.

Australia opened the scoring with a goal from captain Eddie Ockenden in the second quarter following an exchange of passes with Jacob Whetton.

India came back into the match when Lalit Upadhyay scored on a penalty corner from close range in the 42nd minute, but it was not enough as Matt Gohdes hit the winner eight minutes from time to give Australia their 28th Champions Trophy medal.

Meanwhile, London 2012 silver medallists The Netherlands scored four times in the final quarter to turn things around after trailing 1-0 down to Argentina to salvage a fifth place finish.

Argentine skipper Matías Paredes scored first with a goal in the 19th minute and it was not until the 47th minute that the Dutch side came back with a penalty corner goal from Mink van der Weerden.

Jeroen Hertzberger then scored twice and Constantijn Jonker once to take the game and fifth place.

Despite the 4-1 win, The Netherlands were still not entirely happy with the overall outcome.

"We didn't come all the way to India to come fifth so it is a big disappointment," Dutch player Jonker admitted.

"The quarter-final against Pakistan still hurts.

"But once we lost that match, it was simple.

"We had to finish fifth and I am very glad we did that.

"We showed character and I am proud of how the team played in the last two matches.

"It didn't come easy but we managed to pull through."

Finally, England overcame Belgium 3-2 to claim seventh place at the tournament.

Belgian Florent van Aubel scored first in the match, but his lead was trashed by three England goals - two from David Condon and one from Chris Griffiths.

Van Aubel scored again in the 39th minute but it was not enough to take the win from England.
