The Netherlands' Marjolein Buis combined with compatriot Michaela Spaanstra for the first time in a major tournament ©Getty ImagesThe Netherlands' Marjolein Buis and Michaela Spaanstra upset the odds to beat world number one pairing of Japan's Yui Kamiji and Great Britain's Jordanne Whiley at f the 2014 UNIQLO Wheelchair Double Masters in Mission Viejo, California.

Buis combined with Spaanstra, who was making her tournament debut, to win 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 in a thrilling pool phase contest that lasted nearly four hours.

Kamiji and Whiley, the defending champions, had made history this year by becoming the first non-Dutch pairing to win all four Grand Slam titles in a calendar year.

"We are so excited about this win," Buis told the International Tennis Federation.

"We went on court with a plan and stuck to that plan.

"Today was about playing smart.

"This is the first major tournament we've played as a couple.

"The start couldn't have been any better."

Germany's Sabine Ellerbrock and Great Britain's Lucy Shuker, seeded second, booked their place in the last four after beating respective compatriots Katharina Kruger and Louise Hunt in straight sets.

The top two partnerships from each women's doubles pool will progress to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the quad competition, Nick Taylor and David Wagner of the United States ensured their place in the final tomorrow by beating Great Britain's Antony Cotterill and fellow countryman Greg Hasterok in a two-set victory.

Having been defeated by Taylor and Wagner on day one, Great Britain's Jamie Burdekin and Andy Lapthorne registered their first victory against the United States' David Buck and Italy's Antonio Raffaele in straight sets.

Burdekin and Lapthorne will face Cotterill and Hasterok in the last pool game to decide who progresses to the final.

France's Stéphane Houdet continued his bid to win a third successive men's title as he and Belgium's Joachim Gerard booked their place in the semi-finals, edging past Japan's world number one Shingo Kunieda and South Africa's Evans Maripa.

The Netherlands' pairing of Tom Egberink and Maikel Scheffers made light work of Brazil's Rafael Medeiros and Daniel Rodrigues in straight sets, and will now face Kunieda and Maripa for a place in the last four.

Elsewhere, France's Michael Jeremiasz and Great Britain's Gordon Reid beat runners-up at Roland Garros, Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez and The Netherlands' Nicolas Peifer, across three sets.
